Literary SEO: Is Holden Caulfield a Christ Figure?

Screen Shot 2013-02-07 at 10.00.23 PMIs Holden Caufield a Christ figure? It’s a great question, and a lot of people are asking themselves this week, “Does Holden Caulfield resemble Christ?” Is Holden a metaphor for Christ? One could even be more bold: does J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye feature a Christ figure? Let’s consider the facts.

Catcher in the Rye is J. D. Salinger’s only novel, and the only novel to feature Hoden Cualfield. So if one were looking for a Christ figure in a novel by J. D. Salinger, Catcher in the Rye would be the place to look. Is his name, “Holden,” supposed to sound like “holding”? Is Holden Cafield “holding” something? The best thing to do, if we wanted to answer these questions, would be to look for some Cather in the Rye metaphor examples, and then do an analysis of Catcher in the Rie metaphors.

We would have to look at some Catcher in the Rye quotes to answer this question, or we might even have to consult a Catcher in the Rye summary. It would be helpful if there was a Catcher in the Rye ebook available. That might help us to answer some questions, such as: Is the fact that he’s a Christ figure why people sometimes think Holden Caufield is gay? That the protagonist of Catcher in the Rye is depressed? Or maybe even Salinger’s hero is himself a phony? These are all great questions. Or is Holden Caulfield a hero? It’s possible, too, just like it’s possible that The Catcher in the Rye’s hero is autistic.

But is he a reliable narrator? Is he a coward? Is he a dynamic, or static character? And is Holding Caulfield a moral character? Does Holden have PTSD? Does Holden like the movie? Does Holden die? Does Holden like Stradlater? What are 5 things Holden likes and dislikes? Does he like books? Does Holden like girls? These are all important questions, and it’s worth asking them all. Would it help to know more about J. D. Saliner’s biography? Most certainly. Then we would be able to answer questions like: How is Holden like a Christ figure? What are the similarities between Holden Cawlfield and Chris? What if The Cather in the Rye is actually about an antihero? And what about Holden Caulfield’s hat?

What if Holden Caufield and Jesus Christ go to New Orleans. Christ is from Baltimore; Hilden is from San Francisco. It’s the LXVIIth time they’ve met. Jesus carries a raven on his shoulder; Jesus carries The Ravens on his shoulder. Holden is joined by Joe Montana. It’s the 49ers-th time they’ve met. It’s super, their meeting. It’s a super meeting of the Huffington Post, who is also a Christ figure. They stand, Holden and Jesus, in a giant bowl. A bowl so giant you could also say it’s super. A super bowl.

Now, what time does this Superbowl start?

  1. You might be wondering, what is search engine optimization? Or, put differently, search engine optimization is something about which a lot of people wonder. People have wondered how to optimize search engines so as to optimize other things. Like site stats. Or literature. So let’s ask the question: if Avidly wanted to optimize our search engine optimization, how would we do that? Let’s consider the facts, about Holden Caulfield.

  3. This type of Blog entry is one of the MANY reasons the internet will continue to be a second-rate source of information. There seems to be little regard for any form of editorial discretion what-so-ever. Because of that, every idiot who wishes to wipe his or her rump with the Internet, does so with glee and then holds-up the proof of his (or her) endeavors – wanting us to salute this latest work of genius. Perhaps this troll’s work is seen as awesome – but to my mind, it is juvenile. This is not a condemnation of the Internet/Computers/21st Century Communication… that would be far too easy… this is an indictment of our society. Idiots will do, what idiots have always done; now, apparently, we applaud it.
